Nigh by God It is clear that our nearness to God, or our distance from God, is largely a matter of our own choosing. God is faithful and just: He will keep His promises and cooperate with us in our efforts to do what He asks us to do. He has promised that then He will draw near to us, for so we read: Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you (James 4:8). How can we know when we are near to God? Is it just a matter of asking ourselves and returning an immediate answer? It is better to ask ourselves if we are earnestly and consistently endeavoring to “draw nigh to God.” The Spirit tells us, Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves (2 Corinthians 13:5)…


The Vegetable in the Witness Box

It cannot be too strongly emphasized that the old scientific formula “survival of the fittest” simply meant the selection or those most capable of living; without the slightest regard to the higher standards by which we judge them. According to the Darwinian school, there was no other force to give Nature an upward tendency. Thus it is necessary to ask the question, In what sense do you use the word fitness? Find a plant, delicate, beautiful, bearing wonderful flowers or fruit, having many qualities to attract, and we agree that judging by the higher standard, it is one of the most fit to survive. By the jungle law, however, it would not be fit at all, and if we want it to flourish and reveal all its qualities, we must assiduously guard its struggle for existence…
